Wii-Super Paper Mario

This is one of the most unique Mario games out. Implementing the pretty obvious idea of Mario being a 2D adventure into flipping him around and making this flat hero both a 3D and 2D caper around the world. On top of that, you will get some help from Pixls, magical beings of the mid-dimension to solve puzzles all over the world. From revealing invisible doors, to blowing up walls, these Pixls make the game very enjoyable.

Also, once freed, you can play as Peach, Luigi, and even Bowser as well! Each one has their own specialty and disadvantages, but all in all, each one is fun to play. The humor is pretty humorous for once, but does involve tons of reading. I personally think that the idea of reading so much in a MARIO game is a bad idea. Another feature some may like but I hate, the heart system, which was also seen in Super Mario 2, where you have lots of health, but don’t use the whole mushroom and “Super” mario system where you would become bigger than regular mario.

Going hand in hand with this, there is the, what I call, “Self-Economic System”, which allows gamers, like in many other hits, to use coins, or money for that matter to buy items, powerups, weapons, upgrades, and more. You may use coins collected in the different chapters in stores, or motels and the such to purchase some things and services to aid you on your quest to defeat the ‘interesting’ Count Bleck. All in all, I think this is a tedious, yet somewhat fun game that is recommended to only the hardiest of Mario fans.

Your most important observation is about the reading. I wholeheartedly agree with that. The amount of dialog is way too excessive, most of which seems more like silly (and quite abusive to the player) private jokes that the developers injected to, maybe, inflate the shallow, infantile story line. The puzzles are very intriguing at first, but the entire game becomes cumbersome after one realizes that THERE IS SO MUCH TO freaking read in order to get forward. I can see so many ways to make this game a lot more intelligent, since the concept of flipping is awesome really. It is a shame that NINTENDO did not take this great concept where it should have gone. All in all I think that this game just misses the mark, as 10+ years old gamers will find it too simplistic (Once you figure out the flipping – almost everything is pretty much no surprise anymore) and younger gamers will be unable to keep up with the exorbitant amount of reading involved, annoyingly become dependent on someone to hold their had during gameplay. Well this one was a disappointment to me.
